Frequently Asked Questions

  • Q: Are there jobs in the Houghton/Hancock/Keweenaw area?
  • A: The immediate vicinity includes Houghton, Hancock and surrounding communities. This area continues to grow and expand with high tech companies leading the way. In addition to Michigan Tech, Finlandia University is located in Hancock. Keep in mind, however, that this is not a major metropolitan area and searching for employment may require patience and persistence.
  •
  • Q: Does working with the DCAP mean I am guaranteed employment?
  • A: The DCAP cannot guarantee you employment because the DCAP does not create job openings. It is important that you maintain frequent contact with the DCAP office to facilitate sharing of information.
  •
  • Q: Will I be given preferential treatment for Michigan Tech positions?
  • A: Michigan Tech is committed to assisting dual career couples, but the fact that you are the spouse/partner of a faculty or staff person does not guarantee you a position at the University. Departments across campus are interested in bringing in the best, most qualified candidate for their open position.
  •
  • Q: How long will it take to get hired?
  • A: There is no definite response to this question. The DCAP office will work with you to make as many contacts as possible, both on campus and in the local community.
  •
  • Q: My job experience is quite unique. What if I can't find something in my line of work?
  • A: Your options will be greater if you are flexible in what you are willing to take on. If you are interested in starting your own business, assistance may be available. Contact the DCAP Coordinator for more information.
